Fishing Vessel Deckhand (Whelk Fishery)
Job Description:
We are recruiting a Fishing Vessel Deckhand to work on a small inshore fishing vessel engaged in whelk (shellfish) fishing using pots. The role involves supporting daily fishing operations at sea, handling fishing gear, and processing catch in compliance with Irish maritime safety standards.
Key Duties:
Hauling and setting whelk pots (creels) using a hydraulic hauler
Baiting pots and preparing gear for deployment
Sorting, grading, and storing whelk catch onboard
Cleaning and maintaining pots, ropes, and deck equipment
Assisting with navigation and general vessel operations as directed by the skipper
Loading and unloading catch at port
Ensuring cleanliness and hygiene standards on deck
Following all onboard health and safety procedures
Requirements:
Previous experience in fishing, marine work, or similar manual labour (preferred but not essential)
Ability to carry out repetitive physical tasks (lifting pots, working in wet and cold conditions)
Willingness to work long and irregular hours depending on tides and weather
Ability to work as part of a small crew in confined spaces
Basic English communication skills
Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
Safety training (e.g., basic sea survival) is an advantage but training can be provided

Vessel: MFV Claude Edith (WD 237)
Salary: €36,605 per annum (guaranteed basic salary), plus potential catch-based bonuses
Hours: 39 hours per week, variable according to tides, weather conditions, and fishing schedule.
Contract type: Full-time, fixed-term
Duration: 2 years / 24 months
Additional Requirements:
Must comply with all onboard health and safety procedures, including alcohol and drug policies
Must be able to report to vessel operations based in Arklow, County Wicklow
