We are seeking a detail-oriented Public Health Abstractor to support ongoing surveillance and data collection for CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. In this role, you will perform daily abstractions from electronic medical records and educational files to evaluate developmental health outcomes and support public health research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
• Review and abstract complex clinical and educational records for children identified with or suspected of developmental disabilities.
• Utilize REDCap, electronic medical record (EMR) systems, and education databases to accurately enter and manage surveillance data.
• Partner with public health genetics teams, surveillance coordinators, and project stakeholders on program operations and data compliance.
• Maintain and update healthcare facility contact registries to request and secure remote access to medical records.
• Participate in program meetings, technical discussions, and collaborative multi-agency initiatives.
• Assist in developing community educational resources, web content, and standard operational documentation.
• Triage inquiries from healthcare providers and the public, directing questions to appropriate specialists as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in public health, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Health Informatics, or a closely related field preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience with clinical or medical record abstraction preferred.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR/EMR), database platforms, and web-based tools like REDCap strongly preferred.
• Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with autism spectrum disorders and childhood developmental conditions is highly desirable.
• Communication: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills for liaising with clinical providers and administrative staff.
• Work Style: Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical reasoning, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Required / Desired Skills
• Public Health, Genetics, Nursing, Early childhood education/development, Special Education, or a closely related field Required - 4 Years
• Experience with database systems and web-based applications including REDCap, electronic medical records, and electronic education records Required - 2 Years
