Machinist (Conventional / Manual) Precision Engineering • Location: Nelson, Lancashire • Contract: 12 week temp to perm (probation), converting to permanent based on performance and attendance Shifts available: • Days: 08:00 16:30, Monday to Friday - 16.62 per hour, OR, • Nights: 22:00 07:00, Monday to Thursday - 23.27 per hour Our client is a precision engineering business in East Lancashire looking for experienced Manual Machinists with strong hands on skills. The focus is on conventional manual turning and milling to produce high accuracy components, with some interaction with CNC and inspection activities. This is a shop floor role suited to time served machinists who enjoy varied, bespoke work and take pride in working to tight tolerances. Key responsibilities • Set up and operate manual lathes and milling machines to produce precision components • Read and interpret engineering drawings and job sheets to machine to tight tolerances • Use precision gauges and measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, dial indicators, etc.) to check your own work • Ensure dimensional accuracy and surface finish meet specification • Carry out routine machine maintenance and safe material handling • Work alongside CNC machinists, fabrication and quality teams to meet deadlines • Assist with priority/urgent jobs and suggest practical improvements to machining methods • Maintain a clean, safe and organised work area in line with 5S and health & safety standards Skills & Experience required • Time served or proven experience as a Manual Machinist in a precision engineering or machine shop environment • Strong manual turning and milling skills, including machine setup and working to tight tolerances • Ability to read engineering drawings and use precision measuring instruments • Experience with centre lathes, manual milling machines and hand held tools • Familiarity with CNC milling/turning, including multi axis centres • Basic exposure to CMM inspection or working closely with quality inspectors • Understanding of fabrication and welding processes (MIG/TIG) is advantageous • Good awareness of health and safety regulations and commitment to safe working practices • GCSE or equivalent qualification (preferred) Interested in this role?
