Demand for GPU and high-performance computing (HPC) capacity on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is accelerating as customers scale machine learning training and inference workloads. We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead the team that builds the systems behind EC2 Capacity Blocks — the service that lets customers reserve co-located GPU and accelerated compute instances for their ML workloads. You will own the service roadmap, guide technical direction, and lead an engineering team of 8–10 as we invest in new features that simplify capacity discovery and solve complex demand-and-supply problems. If you want to combine people leadership with deep technical work in an area that is growing fast, we would like to talk to you.
Key job responsibilities - Own the EC2 Capacity Blocks service and its roadmap, making architectural and prioritization decisions that directly improve how customers discover, reserve, and consume GPU and HPC capacity. - Lead and grow an inclusive team of 8–10 engineers, mentoring them through design reviews, collaborative development planning, and strategic project assignments. - Partner with EC2 capacity planning teams and product managers to align on priorities, resolve ambiguity, and deliver solutions that balance customer needs. - Define and maintain operational metrics and audit mechanisms to measure system health, and customer experience, taking action to close gaps. - Drive the technical roadmap, evaluating tradeoffs across Rust and Java services to ensure reliable, performant systems.
A day in the life Your time splits between people leadership and technical guidance. Mornings often start with checking operational health and connecting with your team, while the rest of the day moves between technical discussions, one-on-ones with engineers, planning sessions with product managers, and cross-team alignment meetings. You will balance hands-on involvement in architecture and roadmap decisions with coaching your team and removing blockers so they can deliver effectively.
About the team Our team sits within Amazon EC2 and owns EC2 Capacity Blocks — the service that enables customers to reserve co-located GPU and accelerated compute instances for machine learning training and inference. We work closely with EC2 capacity planning and product management to make sure the right capacity reaches the right customers at the right time. We are investing in new features that make capacity discovery simpler and smarter, and we are looking for a leader who is excited to shape that direction with us.
