Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is a private fusion energy company founded in 2017 by Bob Mumgaard and researchers from MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, CFS develops high-temperature superconducting magnet technology to enable practical, cost-effective fusion reactors. With approximately 350 employees, the company has raised over 1.2 billion dollars in Series B funding from institutional investors including Google, Khosla Ventures, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures. CFS aims to demonstrate commercial fusion power before the end of the 2020s and represents the growing private fusion sector advancing clean energy solutions through advanced materials and magnetic confinement physics.
