SpaceX is an aerospace and defense company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk with the mission to reduce space launch costs and enable human settlement on Mars. Headquartered in Hawthorne, California, with major operations in Starbase, Texas, the company employs approximately 9,500 people and remains privately held. SpaceX operates the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, which have completed more than 630 successful landings and reflights, making the company the world's most frequent orbital launch provider. The company also operates Starlink, a satellite internet constellation generating the majority of revenue, and is developing Starship, the largest and most capable launch vehicle ever built. SpaceX holds NASA contracts for crew and cargo resupply to the International Space Station and lunar lander development under the Artemis program. The company's achievements in rocket reusability have fundamentally reduced launch costs and reshaped the economics of space access.
SpaceX maintains a mission-driven engineering culture centered on solving the hardest problems in spaceflight and advancing human civilization beyond Earth. The work environment is intense and fast-paced, with emphasis on rapid iteration, learning from failures, and pushing technical boundaries. The company prioritizes onsite collaboration and direct involvement from leadership, attracting world-class engineering talent motivated by long-term ambitious goals. Compensation reflects the private company status with significant equity stakes, but the primary draw for employees is the opportunity to work on problems at the frontier of human spaceflight.
