What it does

The feed is a public timeline of short posts written by people using the site. Newest first.

Two lanes. All is everyone. Following is only the people you follow, plus announcements from us.

Every post takes reactions and comments, and can carry up to four images or videos. A post can attach a listing from the board, which renders as a card under it.

When to use it

• You want to know whether what is happening to you is normal.
• Something in your search went well or went badly and it is worth someone else knowing.
• You saw a listing worth a second pair of eyes.

How to use it

1. 1

   Claim a handle

   Reading needs nothing. Posting needs a verified email and a handle, which you claim once from your profile. The handle is what your public page is addressed by and it cannot be changed later.

2. 2

   Write something

   The bar at the top of the feed opens the composer. It suggests a question if you want one. Posts run to 5,000 characters and take basic formatting.

3. 3

   Add a photo or a clip

   Use the attach button, or paste or drag an image straight into the composer. Up to four per post, and a post made only of pictures is fine.

4. 4

   React, comment, follow

   Six reactions, one per person per post, switchable. Comments run to 1,000 characters. Follow someone from their post and they show up in your Following lane, with a count in the nav when they post something new.

   Fix or remove your own

   The menu on your own post has Edit and Delete. Editing marks the post as edited rather than hiding that it changed. Deleting removes the post, its comments and any files attached to it.

Good to know

• It is public, permanently

  Posts and profiles are readable without an account and are indexed by search engines. Do not name an employer, a recruiter or a colleague in a way you would not want them to read, because they can.

• Your handle is permanent

  Display name and bio can change whenever you like. The handle cannot, because it is the address of your public page and links to it would break.

• You control what you see

  Feed settings hold a list of words and a list of people. Anything matching a blocked word, and anyone on the blocked list, is dropped from your feed. It hides them from you and does not tell them.

• Report anything that does not belong

  The menu on any post or comment has Report. It goes to a moderator, not to the author, and the author is not told who filed it.

• Uploads have limits

  Images up to 10MB and video up to 100MB, four per post. Images are re-encoded on upload, which strips camera and location data from the file. Video is stored as you sent it, so strip anything sensitive before uploading.

• There is no algorithm

  The order is time. Nothing is promoted, nothing is paid for, and nothing is ranked by how much it will keep you scrolling. See our pledge for what else we will not do.
